ELLA DRAKE (NEXT MODEL)

"Stylish travel" was the stated theme of Frida Giannini's latest collection, though it could be argued that the concept has been part and parcel of Gucci since its inception. Working with a neutral palette of khaki, rust, and army green for day, the designer turned out a waxed cotton trench, sporty silk jumpsuit with elastic waist, and whisper-thin leather biker jacket.

VLADA ROSLYAKOVA (WOMEN)

There was a bit of military and a lot of urban cool in the look, which reflected the simplified, back-to-brand-basics approach Giannini has been taking of late. A series of saddle-printed silks smartly nodded to Gucci's rich heritage, as did a chain-strap purse with gold logo based on a design from the seventies.

CHARLOTTE DI CALYPSO (ELITE MODEL)

The freshest evening looks, not surprisingly, were in that very of-the-moment color, blush: a short beaded number with open sides and a stunning silk wrap gown with silver beaded trim. Buon viaggio, indeed.

Karl Lagerfeld Spring 2010 RTW.

Charlotte di Calypso (ELITE)

The invite featured Mondino's classic shot of skinny Karl as guitar hero. The backdrop was stacks of amps, à la rock band of your choice.

So far, so in tune with the edgy scrawniness of this label's wares to date. But then, typical of Lagerfeld, the clothes turned around and defeated expectations.

Karmen Pedaru (NEXT)

The foundation stone of the collection was shorts. "Not Bermudas or hot pants," the designer was quick to point out backstage, but a contemporary variation that emphasized rounded hips.

Mirte Maas (WOMEN)

They looked almost like tap shorts, especially when they showed in white satin.

Karlie Kloss (NEXT)

Lagerfeld pushed his idea with all-in-one playsuits—sometimes hanging off dungaree straps, sometimes with no straps at all—which dropped into deep-pleated shorts (it was particularly striking in red leather).

Abbey Lee (NEXT)

This bizarre notion was so insistent throughout the presentation that it took on a persuasive life of its own.

Kendra Spears (ELITE)

And, in its peculiar way, it fit with jackets whose hems were folded up to shoulders that buttoned down. Imagine WAACs hoofing "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" on Mars and you get the picture.

Mathilde Frachon (NEXT)

The clincher was a finale of outfits that were traced with an overlapping silver filigree. It was metal, yes, but it wasn't heavy. In other words, a practically lighthearted approach for a line that has, in the past, made an art of lugubriousness.
