CHANEL PRE-FALL 2010.

How often does a city actually play a leading role in a fashion show? It happened tonight in Shanghai, where the spectacular twenty-first-century skyline and teeming waterfront—complete with kaleidoscopic neon, Jetsons-meets-Blade Runner towers, improbable glittering disco-ball telecommunications installations, and fast-moving pleasure boats, barges, and tugs—became the live, moving backdrop to Chanel's Paris-Shanghai pre-fall runway.

As a thousand guests sat on a darkened pontoon moored in the Huangpu River, models ranged to and fro in front of a translucent wall, so the speedy, dirty, visually thrilling urban nightscape became, as Karl Lagerfeld put it, "the set."

The designer played the collection fast and loose, a multidimensional fantasia that dipped deeply into Shanghai's louche past as the Paris of the East.

Clothes-wise it involved glancing references to Chinese sartorial history, from the terra-cotta army through cheongsams, Mandarin split-sided Qipao gowns, deep lacquer-red embellishments and silk linings, Mongolian tapestry boots and shaggy furs, and spins on Communist Mao suits and comrade caps.

Did Gabrielle Chanel ever set foot in the gambling parlors; opium dens; and shady, glamorous nightclubs of twenties and thirties Shanghai? Well, no.

The collection yielded covetable gilded embroidery in the form of a Chinese cabinet on a windowpane tweed suit, camellias carved into the surfaces of black leather leggings, and a military quilted vest, but the elaborate justification for this latest flex of Chanel's corporate muscle was a Lagerfeld-directed movie, Paris-Shanghai: A Fantasy, starring the designer's inner-circle favorites.

Amanda Harlech impersonated the Duchess of Windsor, and Freja Beha Erichsen and Baptiste Giabiconi played a pair of young Communists, while the convincing Coco look-alike Jane Schmitt dreamed her way from an afternoon nap in her chinoiserie-decorated Rue Cambon apartment through various sequences in Old Shanghai—not forgetting an encounter with Marlene Dietrich on the way.

Tongue-in-cheek it may have been—Mademoiselle's love of chinoiserie allegedly went so deep that, among other things, she based the design of her bag on Chinese quilting.

Who knew? But the film elicited much good-humored laughter from the crowd of Shanghainese beautiful people before everyone migrated across the road for a vast cabaret party at the recently restored Deco Peninsula Hotel.

The point—other than a platform for the workmanship of the house's specialist craftspeople in its Métiers d'Art, and an outlet for Lagerfeld's interest in filmmaking? A giant social power play for the eminence of brand Chanel in China, of course.

To judge by the young, exquisitely dressed women outfitted top to toe in Chanel in the audience, this market, if not quite as booming as it was two years ago, is visibly open to more expansion where a trusted CC investment is concerned.

Chanel just opened a store on the Bund opposite the show venue, and it's been packed with people all week—including, at peak times, several couples occupying the jewelry department, looking bent on acquisition.

OSCAR DE LA RENTA PRE-FALL 2010.

OSCAR DE LA RENTA

MODEL: CHRISTIE

PRE-FALL 2010 COLLECTION

"You have to make a woman fall in love with your clothes."

That was Oscar de la Renta backstage before his pre-fall show, talking about how to woo the customer during the recession.
Model: Yulia Kharlaponova

Up economy or down, special pieces, not basics, are this designer's MO, and at his runway show today, he sent out a few beauties.

On the more restrained side, there was a great pair of black denim toreador pants, worn with a pretty embroidered nude silk chiffon blouse, as well as a sexy plunging lace cocktail dress, also in black.

But de la Renta wasn't really in understated mode. His color palette was a spicy mix of canary yellow, vermillion, pink, and ruby, and he favored ikats, suzani embroideries, and bold patchworks to simpler fare.

Many of the looks were accessorized with scarves or little sweaters wrapped around the models' necks.

The multicolor patchwork carried into evening; he showed a long narrow skirt with a ruffled silk chiffon blouse and a can't-miss-it necklace.

Some clients might find that kind of full-on luxe too over-the-top, downturn or not.
Model: Angelika Kocheva

For them, de la Renta whipped up a black silk faille gown with plenty of drama on the left shoulder that looked special in a lower key.

VERA WANG PRE-FALL 2010.

VERA WANG

PRE-FALL 2010 COLLECTION

Vera Wang's ready-to-wear is synonymous with a sort of artsy dressiness, so her pre-fall collection of tailoring, structured outerwear, and body-hugging knits was something of a departure.

"I'm pushing myself out of my comfort zone," the designer said.

But Wang seems quite assured working with these new categories.

A boy blazer in charcoal wool twill with a double lapel in darker gray was coolly confident.

If her client isn't quite ready to work a suit (the jacket was paired here with a short, sculpted skirt), Wang included plenty of the layerable lean basketball T-shirts and leggings she's long been known for.

Black tinsel trim on hems and Mongolian lamb swatches on pockets or shoulders ensured that her parkas and anoraks looked signature, too.

And despite the fact that she was focused mostly on daywear (retailers are looking for versatility and low cost per wear), she showed one of her most stunning evening looks in a long time.

It was a tulle T-shirt dress with a swirl of multicolor paillettes, sequins, and beads on the front and simple black jersey on the back.

It'll be expensive, but it'll be worth it.

BURBERRY PRORSUM PRE-FALL 2010.

BURBERRY PRORSUM

PRE-FALL 2010 COLLECTION

Consider epaulets, the tablike vestiges of buttoned-down militaria that are currently seeing all kinds of action at Burberry Prorsum.

Christopher Bailey figured out on his pre-fall drawing board that they're a neat device for flagging two trends in one, not only signaling military but also adding shoulder emphasis without the need for crazy padding.

Fabric shoulder strips appeared in a traditional way on a khaki officer's coat inspired by a World War I uniform in the company archive and took less conventional guises elsewhere, cropping up in navy fur, roosting on an Air Force blue jacket, and even turning girly as a couple of black satin ribbon bows on knits.

Is the detail in this transition season between Bailey's short, tight, and drapey Spring collection and what he'll be doing for Fall significant? Could this more regimental take on military (which also includes some great cropped aviator jackets) indicate something more sober and substantial in the works?

That's too early to call, but the close-to-the-body cut of the coats looked strong shrugged over the pretty, droopy lace dresses Bailey has made a house staple.

RAG & BONE PRE-FALL 2010.

RAG & BONE

"Versatility," Marcus Wainwright said, tongue in cheek. "Buy-now-wear-now."

He was making light called of what he called the "clichés of the pre-fall season," but in fact, Rag & Bone's latest effort was all about that kind of wearability.

Along with his design partner, David Neville, Wainwright focused on interpreting cooler-weather silhouettes in lightweight fabrics.

Witness a tailored blazer done in an ultrafine see-through wool and a creamy suede bomber jacket that's virtually weightless.

Texture was also important; most garments comprised multiple materials. A black leather tank, for example, featured a sheer jersey back, while a breezy charmeuse frock—printed with a Japanese inkblot motif—had a pleasing hang thanks to cotton lining.

"We're not the all-silk-dress type of brand," Wainwright explained. With the recent opening of a third boutique and others potentially in the pipeline for next year, "struggling young designers" is one cliché this duo is happily avoiding.

NICOLE MILLER PRE-FALL 2010.

NICOLE MILLER

PRE-FALL 2010 COLLECTION

Nicole Miller picked up on the Native American influence for pre-fall, but don't expect anything too New Age-y from this longtime New Yorker.

A silk cocktail dress featured a digitalized Navajo print and metallic feather trim, while beige nubuck leather was used for a biker jacket and matching miniskirt.

If a stretch denim zip-front body-con dress with frayed pintucking felt too busy for Miller's modern girl-about-town, a metal taffeta strapless cocktail number with a subtle snakeskin pattern was a charmer.

NAEEM KHAN PRE-FALL 2010.

NAEEM KHAN

Further proof of the power of MObama: Naeem Khan was the third most searched-for name on Google the week after the First Lady wore his strapless gold gown to November's White House state dinner.

The sudden attention could ruffle a less experienced designer, but Khan seems to be basking in the attention: The eveningwear he showed for pre-fall was his most assured in recent memory.

"It's a sexy Moulin Rouge!-meets-Nine feel," the designer said of the richly textured pieces, which included a cocktail frock beaded in a chevron pattern, a black wool-cashmere caftan with a jewel-embellished neckline, and dresses trimmed in paillettes overlaid with marabou.

The effect was youthful and fresh, but not so young as to veer into Gossip Girl territory.

Perfect for, say, a certain Beltway-residing fan.

MODEL: CASSIANE BOHN

J. MENDEL PRE-FALL 2010.

J. MENDEL

PRE-FALL 2010 COLLECTION

"I'm really having a 'night moment,' " Gilles Mendel said of his pre-fall collection.

His core clientele—starlets readying for awards season, included—will surely be drawn to the draped gowns and elegant cocktail frocks Mendel has made his name with, this season in metallic golds and stoplight reds that almost call to mind the twinkling lights of a city after sunset.

But the designer wasn't focused solely on evening; he smartly experimented in other areas by playing with fabric combinations.

A cropped wool tuxedo jacket, for example, got a youthful twist with jersey insets, and the furs were not exactly your grandmother's variety: A mix of sable, muskrat, and raccoon jazzed up a standard winter topper, while a cropped multi-fur trimmed jacket with removable leather sleeves was about as hip a pelt as we've seen.

CAROLINA HERRERA PRE-FALL 2010.

CAROLINA HERRERA

PRE-FALL 2010 COLLECTION.

"I wanted everything light as a feather," Carolina Herrera said about pre-fall.
MODEL: AUDI

Where better to look for inspiration than the tango? The designer used a colorful 1920's print of dancers locked arm in arm for both a crepe de chine cocktail dress and a floor-length shirt gown, and its bold hues—lava red, dandelion yellow, and Directoire blue—informed the rest of a cheerful collection that played to the designer's strengths.

Herrera's tweed separates are so airy you can practically see through them, though her lineup was mostly dresses: above-the-knee blouson shifts and fitted sheaths, some with embroidered brooches, for day; and, for after eight, a moiré draped one-shoulder column and a floral-print jacquard dot fils coupe number sure to see a lot of action on the gala circuit.
MODEL: YANA KARPOVA.

The pièce de résistance was a strapless multi-stripe gown with long train made from a single piece of draped duchesse satin.

It wasn't necessarily made for dancing, but it would make an unforgettable entrance.

CALVIN KLEIN PRE-FALL 2010.

CALVIN KLEIN

PRE-FALL 2010 COLLECTION.

Francisco Costa scaled down his presentation, opting for an informal showing instead of a runway, but he didn't skimp an inch on the fabric or construction of the luxe basics in his pre-fall lineup.

His blouson toggle coats and jackets are cut from a double-face cashmere wool that's a dream to touch, while his slim, flat-front pants are completely dart-less: "It took a long time to get the fit right," he said. "It's all in the cut around the butt, the thighs."

Also innovative were his matte cashmere knits, made on a circular knitting machine to create a relaxed, cocoonlike silhouette.

Overall, Costa takes a less experimental approach to this collection than he does his catwalk shows—a strategy not without its benefits.

How's this for versatile: Hanging on the racks were navy, ruby, and nectarine versions of many of the 17 black and white looks he put on models.

Still, there was plenty of fashion with a capital F, notably in the easy-chic, pleated georgette dresses that were actually tops worn with ankle-length skirts.

ALEXANDER WANG PRE-FALL 2010.

ALEXANDER WANG

PRE-FALL 2010 COLLECTION.

"My girl, she's got to go to work sometime," Alexander Wang joked.

Presumably, the designer's cultish fans have been wearing what he calls his "casual sportswear" around the clock—to the club and to the office.

But for pre-fall, he's zeroing in on trousers (in narrow, almost legginglike knits or cropped and full in menswear wools) and jackets that came long, lean, and lapel-less, as well as short and tiered.

Wang's also feeling for layers, throwing shorts or a mini over those skinny pants and adding sexy, peplumed leather corsets on top of a shirtdress or under a suit.

The collection's banded sweater and long, mid-calf-length skirt were definite departures from his edgy downtown vibe—yet decidedly winning. Wang should push this serious thing further.

But, of course, it would be foolish to abandon his fan base entirely.

For his party girl (and the stores who can't keep the frock in stock) he did another one of his draped goddess dresses, this time with a leather bra-cup bodice and sequins.

THE PRINCESS DIARY.

Walter Pfeiffer’s use of pattern within his work, is always intriguing and his colorful editorial for January’s Vogue China is a real treat.

The story features Edita Vilkeviciute looking sophisticated in festive pieces chosen by stylist, Anastasia Barbieri, but the most impressive part of the story is the way that each piece of clothing coordinates perfectly with the backdrop.

Whether it is a Dior couture dress looking amazing against a powder pink chaise or gold Westwood almost blending into satin sheets, the styling on this story is just perfect.
